About

Róise Fitzsimons is a ceramic artist working across functional and sculptural forms.

Róise's practice is grounded in a love of making beautiful objects. Pieces are made slowly and in small quantities, with each one carrying the marks and variations of the making process.

Her work ranges from serving bowls and platters to vases and sculptural pieces, often exploring delicate details and hand-painted patterns.

Róise has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UNSW College of Fine Arts*. Her background in fine art continues to inform the way she approaches ceramics, as both useful objects and artworks.

Róise’s love of cooking and hosting for friends and family is at the heart of her functional work. Her tableware is made to be used, for everyday meals, dinner parties and special occasions.

After ten years living overseas in Hong Kong, the United States and Belgium, Róise now lives and works in Canberra with her husband, two children and their dog. Those years have influenced her ideas around home, objects and the things we choose to live with.

*Now known as UNSW Art & Design.
Studio & Process

Róise makes each piece by hand in her Canberra studio.

Rather than aiming for perfect repetition, her process allows for variation between pieces. Slight differences in form, surface, colour and glaze are part of the character of the work and make each object unique.

Róise moves between functional ceramics and more experimental sculptural work, with new pieces often developing through the making process itself.
